Only 36% of Arizona?s third graders are currently reading at or above grade level. To address this crisis, a state law requires all K-5 teachers to earn a formal K-5 Literacy Endorsement by August 1, 2028. To meet this mandate, educators must complete intensive professional development rooted in the Science of Reading, a research-backed approach that builds foundational skills in decoding, comprehension, and language. However, finding daytime classroom coverage so teachers can complete this training without disrupting student learning or adding to their overwhelming workloads is one of the greatest hurdles facing Arizona school districts.
Leaders for Literacy, a hands-on initiative from Valley Leadership?s Early Literacy Impact Maker Team, directly solves this systemic barrier. We are mobilizing skilled community leaders to step into classrooms as substitute teachers, providing the release time educators need to complete their training. By committing 5 to 7 hours once a month for at least 4 months, you aren't just managing a classroom for a day, you are executing prepared substitute plans, stabilizing the learning environment, and actively driving a statewide movement to ensure every child in Arizona learns to read. Commitment & Schedule
Time Commitment: 5 to 7 hours out of school, once a month for a minimum of one semester (at least 4 months).
Schedule: Shifts typically align with school hours or early-release schedules depending on the specific partner district (e.g., Mesa Public Schools, Roosevelt, or Phoenix Elementary School District).
Certifications Needed:Finger Print Clearance Card
Substitute Certification (requires a bachelor?s degree)
All credentialing costs are fully reimbursed by the program Deadline: Commit to participating for the Fall semester before Friday, July 17, 2026 to ensure enough time to complete your onboarding paperwork before starting in the classroom in September. Daily Responsibilities (What You'll Be Doing)
You will step into a designated classroom as a respectful guest and a supportive leader. Your primary goal is to maintain a calm, consistent, and safe environment so learning doesn't stop while the teacher is away. Daily tasks include:
Following the Lesson Plan: Review and execute the curriculum and substitute plans left behind by the classroom teacher.
Classroom Management: Facilitate student engagement using proactive routines and positive reinforcement.
Supporting Diverse Needs: Assist students during whole-group instruction or small-group activities, respecting that every child has a unique learning journey.
Observation & Reflection: Act as a curious observer to better understand the systemic successes and challenges within Arizona's Title I schools.
We are specifically looking for committed participants who can substitute once a month for a minimum of 4 months, matching with the exact same teacher and classroom each time. Specific dates and locations will be shared once matched in the program.
This consistency is highly intentional. By returning to the same classroom, you build meaningful trust with the students, understand their proactive routines, and become a reliable partner to the school. Most importantly, it creates a predictable, stable window of time that allows your designated teacher to focus entirely on their ongoing, consecutive professional development modules. Ready to Learn More or Apply?
If you are Driven to Do for Arizona?s students and teachers, we would love to have you join our next cohort.
